A County Court judgment (CCJ) is a court order which demands you to pay back money owed to your creditor. A creditor can obtain a CCJ against you as a part of the debt collection process if you do not settle a debt you owe by amicable means. A CCJ can be obtained for immediate payment if there has been no response to a legal claim started against you within the set time limits. If you reply to a legal claim within these time limits and offer settlement or instalments which are acceptable the CCJ will state the dates by which payment or instalments are to be made.

CCJ’s are entered in a public register of Judgments Orders and Fines and these are used by credit reference agencies and others seeking information on your financial standing. CCJ’s can have an adverse effect on your ability to obtain credit in the future. The entry will stay on the register for 6 years. If you pay a judgment in full within one month of the date of judgment, you can ask the court to cancel the entry on the register. However, if payment is made after one month the the judgment will remain on record for six years but shown as Satisfied.

Prospective creditors can check these details and make a decision on whether to lend you money or advance your goods and services on credit terms based on this information.

If the debt has not been cleared after six years, the record is automatically removed.

If you have not responded to a CCJ, creditors can use various enforcement methods for recovery, which will increase the amount you have to pay back.
